Press release

Press release of 1 July 2022

CircleTech’s statement on the media debate about encryption: who it supplies its applications to, why it cannot vet their users, and why it has no means of decrypting their communication.

The full statement is in Czech (the PDF below). In summary:

  • Since 2004, CircleTech has developed and sold information-protection software, on mobile devices (SMS007, Trezor, CryptoCult) and beyond, and has supplied thousands of users, mostly in fields with a heightened need to protect information and privacy.
  • It has no means of vetting end users, and refusing to supply its application without a reason would be unlawful discrimination of a consumer. Its terms make using the system for criminal or otherwise illegal activity a breach of contract and a reason to end the business relationship.
  • It firmly objects to encryption being presented as a tool used mainly for illegal purposes. Its users protect their interests lawfully, for example trade secrets and other confidential information, also in view of the GDPR. Presenting cryptography as suspicious or criminal endangers the security of the Czech Republic and its citizens.
  • All its systems are built on end-to-end encryption and the user’s own responsibility. It holds no universal decryption keys, no backups of user data and no other means of decrypting communication afterwards, and it keeps no data on users’ names, contacts, messages, emails, calendars or SIM cards: these exist, encrypted, only on the users’ devices.
